Colorado has updated state requirements for newly installed septic systems to include a secondary riser barrier. Starting July 1st, all Valley Precast septic tank systems will include Septic Tank Shields in addition to standard septic tank risers. This change is in response to updated Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) On-site Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) rules, which require risers on all septic tank openings. The updated standard also requires that risers be equipped with a cover and a secondary safety barrier (such as a shield, grate, or safety net) beneath the primary lid. This added layer of protection helps ensure that if a riser lid is ever damaged, removed, or left open, it prevents accidental entry by people or animals.

At Valley Precast, we stay up to date with state and regulatory changes so you don’t have to—helping ensure your projects meet current requirements and pass inspection with confidence. Please reach out if you have any questions about this update or how it may affect your next installation.
